Gestalt Robotics: Solving for Industrial Autonomous Mobility

Robotics, without software, are fancy doorstops. In order to enable robots to begin to move in human like ways, software for robotic perception, cognition and interaction needs to be enabled and this software is latency sensitive and compute intensive.


Understanding unstructured or unknown environments is a fundamental habitual human skill and one that is a prime challenge for contemporary robotics or any field of flexible automation. Recent advancements in this area allow for behavior tracking as well as autonomy in industrial vehicles like AGVs and mobile robots.

The most exciting, yet also most imposing aspect of computer science and robotics happens when human and machine meet, especially on the automated floor of an assembly plant. By leveraging edge compute, the digitized environments that follow and support the paradigms of natural interaction and human-centric automation with classic and spatial interfaces can be created for close collaboration between man and machine.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are a prime example of human centric interaction where the robot augments the capabilities of the human on a factory product floor. On a basic level, by enabling the robots with autonomous capabilities, they are able to adapt trajectories and actively change behavior in response to current environmental context, e.g. because of temporarily blockage of routes. By enabling the robots to automatically adjust and dynamically adapting to their environment as well as human requests, AGVs equipped with a manipulator, i.e. an industrial robot arm, can flexibly perform tasks at any location within a factory. This enables production lines to be flexible and near instantly reconfigurable without physical human intervention and hours of downtime.

The autonomous capabilities are enabled by off-loading compute intensive activities to the MobiledgeX platform which dramatically simplifies the design, cost and weight of the robot. This platform enables the video feeds / data to be instantly processed at the edge near the robot without having to physically place compute on the robot. Consequently, the mobile robots benefit from a wider range of functions and better performing AI algorithms.
